Skin Cancer Prevention

STOP Skin Cancer before it STARTS

Cancer is a terrible diagnosis in any situation and we all know someone who has been diagnosed with some sort of cancer. But did you know what the most common form of cancer is????

YOU GUESSED IT! -  SKIN CANCER

Here are a few quick statistics about skin cancer to help you wrap your mind around just how common it is:
  • There are more new cases of skin cancer each year than breast, prostate, lung, and colon COMBINED!
  • In the last 30 years, more people have had skin cancer than ALL OTHER CANCERS COMBINED!
  • 1 in 5 Americans WILL BE DIAGNOSED with skin cancer in their lifetime.

**And not all skin cancer is easily removable or treatable. Melanoma is often deadly!

Prevention can be SO EASY so here are a few quick tips:

1. Seek shade
  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. the sun's rays are the brightest and strongest. If you are outside for any reason, simply seek shade to avoid sun damage to your skin.
  • Wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and a hat!
2. DO NOT TAN
  • UV rays cause skin cancer and wrinkling of the skin
3. Wear sunscreen (*Correctly)
  • Reapply every 2 hoursGenerously apply 15 minutes before exposure
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher for protection against UVA and UVB rays
4. Watch out for Snow, Water, and Sand
  • Really? Yes! These surfaces all reflect the sun's rays making it easier to burn and exposing your skin to double the amount of damaging UV rays.
5. Self Check and Visit your Doctor

  2. As much as I don't want to get skin cancer... I love tanning! One day I will stop haha! Understanding how to prevent it so important, I never though about the sand reflecting the sun ray's too. Self-examination is so necessary in finding something early and should be brought to people's attention much more often. I fell like people mostly self examine themselves for other cancers, but skin cancer is just as important.

  3. I really enjoyed your post. I love the background you chose and your entire layout. I also like how you made sure to include pictures, visuals are always helpful. I feel like skin cancer is something that knows about, but that a lot of people tend to overlook. Something that I found to be very interesting that I never knew is that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the country. That's crazy to me and a bit scary, I never knew that skin cancer was that common. Knowing this really encourages me to take your prevention tips to heart. Great post and thanks for sharing!

  4. As much as I hate to admit it, I am guilty of doing the majority of things that cause skin cancer. I go tanning in a tanning bed and I never wear sunscreen. After reading your blog, i kind of took a step back & realized all that i had been doing that could potentially give me skin cancer! I've know all of these facts for a very long time but whenever they're reread, they hit you a little bit harder. I love my skin and I try taking care of it as much as possible, but I definitely should try harder. Thanks for sharing!

  5. I agree with you any cancer is scary. It is important to do as much as you can to prevent any type of cancer. I guess it is true that you learn something new everyday because i did not know that snow, water and sand makes you more accessible to be burned. So i guess putting on sunscreen before going to the beach is very important. I enjoyed this topic a lot!

  6. First off I really liked the way you set up your blog it is very creative. Secondly, I am a very pale person so trying to stay away from tanning and tanning beds is hard. Especially in the summer because I wanna look like most girls lol. But I do apply a lot of sunscreen when i go outside when I know i'm going to the beach or something. Thanks for sharing!!

  9. I love reading your posts! They are eye catching and always full of information. I loved the graphics as well. I didn't realize there were more new cases of skin cancer than breast cancer. The statistics you had were mind-blowing. I think if others read that then they would probably think twice before tanning, but sometimes it is hard for them quit something that makes them feel better about themselves.

  10. I didn't think of snow, water, and sand, but it's true. Sand does get really hot in the sun! And to think that skin cancer is the most common is kind of surprising to me, but makes sense. We have been told our whole lives to not tan, yet we do and it's kind of scary when you sit down and think about how easy it is to contribute to getting skin cancer by the lifestyle choices you make. I tan, I know the facts, yet I still do it. The tips were informative and interesting!

  11. One of my favorite things about your blog is how relatable it is to the average person and the use of graphics to get people's attention. It is really scary that it is the number one cancer because so many of us are out in the sun, are surrounded by snow, and are on a beach and don't think about the sun reflecting and causing us to burn. My grandma had skin cancer many, many times in her life and I need to be more cautious of how I am taking care of my skin because I do not want to go through what she did. Thanks for sharing!

  12. I enjoyed the post!! I know I shouldn't use tanning beds and go out in the sun without sun screen epically because in blonde hair blue eyed but this just shows me even more hoe harmful it can be. You made me think about being careful more than just in the summer.
